HP To Bring webOS as an Open-Source Project |

HP To Bring webOS as an Open-Source Project |

One of the oldest and largest PC manufacturer in world i.e Hewlett Packard (HP) is considered to be one of the worst-affected company during Apple iPad reign. The brand which was once known for its service and consumer satisfaction, were caught up in dilemma for their current product and future projects including its proprietary operating system, the HP webOS.

It was just some days ago that they discontinued their first tablet i.e. Touchpad and also some of the other mobile devices which were running on the webOS. It was just due to the fact that people looked forward to buy an iPad instead of going for a normal Laptop. But now after a deep consideration and business talks within the entire company’s management, HP has now finally decided to revive the well-known webOS (which according to me was soemthing which could give tough competition to iOS and Android) and has decide to make it available to the world as an open source project.

The official announcement was done by the newly appointed CEO, Meg Whitman. However, HP is continuing to support the development of the mobile platform and in the same reference, they also welcomes any kind of  inputs and suggestion from developers and users on their HP webOS blog. The company also hinted that in future, one might see a HTC or Samsung mobile device with webOS and thsi decison was welcomed by webOS developers from all around the world.

Muvi.com – India’s First And Largest Movie Database |

Muvi.com – India’s First And Largest Movie Database |

Muvi.com is a web-based destination site committed to bringing the most complete information on Indian movies across languages to movie lovers in India. Muvi aims at being the largest database of Indian movies. It is about information – movie and celebrity – ranging from Alam Ara to RA.one, Himanshu Rai to Ranveer Singh. Information, that is completely accurate as it is vetted by bona fide sources. Presently, there are no movie database sites in India. All movie websites in India are centered on gossip and page 3 news.

Commenting on the thought behind starting the website, Anshuman Das, Co-founder, muvi.com says, “Though, in India, there are several movie related websites, but there is no comprehensive source to find movie information such as New Trailers or posters, information on old movies and the list of upcoming movies of a star etc. Most existing websites do not have structured data on movies like their western counterparts IMDB, Flixster and Rottentomatoes”

Another unique feature of Muvi.com is wide-ranging review, unlike provided by any other website world over. Muvi.com offers a median review on the latest releases through aggregating and averaging the reviews of all prominent movie critics, and movie related messages from Facebook friends and Twitter using a proprietary ‘Social Relevance’ technology that taps into movie related messages on Facebook and Twitter, and captures overall essence of people’s reaction to the substance of a movie. Facebook is used to muster the reactions of friends and families and Twitter to encapsulate public opinion on the movie. It also has a social layer that connects to your friends on social networks and show their likes and interest in the movies.

Thus, Muvi.com is the only site where people can get access to reviews from a variety of critics in India and the only website worldwide that integrates movies with social networking.

Elaborating on the product strategy, Sanjib Parida, Co-founder, Muvi.com says, “In a world where the collections over opening weekend decide the fate of a movie, drawing fringe viewers to theatres is vital for production houses. Surely, critic review and peer opinion are two big influencers for these people. Muvi.com is also a platform for movie production houses to publish their contents and create a public tend towards it.

Movie production houses in the US have several online outlets such as imdb, movies.yahoo, rottentomatoes and flixter to publish their contents such as trailers, posters and other movie related content. Muvi.com provides first such platform for movie production houses in India.

Walt Disney Acquires Indiagames: Looks to Capture India’s GrowingMobile Subscriber Base |

Walt Disney Acquires Indiagames: Looks to Capture India’s GrowingMobile Subscriber Base |

This can be seen as the biggest deal in India’s online gaming sector as of yesterday : Walt Disney has acquired full stake in Indiagames at an estimated Rs. 390-400 Crore.

In 2006, UTV had purchased 51 percent stake in Indiagames while rest of the stake was held by Indiagames founder and promoter Vishal Gondal, Tom Online, Adobe and Cisco.

Back in July this year, UTV was bought by Walt Disney for Rs 200 Crores. Thus, Walt Disney were already holding 50.44 percent stake of Indiagames and this acquisition means that they’ve purchased rest of the shares. This deal follows Walt Disney’s announcement last month that they are planning to invest more in mobile markets of India and China.

Jay Rasulo, Senior Executive Vice President of Walt Disney commented on the growing market in India:

The amount of content that can be downloaded and interacted with even on a $50 mobile phone in the developing world is incredible and was a shock to us, and with 700 million cellphones in India alone and a million more being added every month, Disney will take advantage of the growing market for mobile content moving forward.

Indiagames were recently in news when they announced a tie up with Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies entertainment for the development of Ra.One social game. And they are one of Top 100 Gaming Studios worldwide which was prepared by Develop 100.

Our Take

The future belongs to mobile phones and tablets. The Indian government realised this and launched the cheapest tablet in the world so that students in the country (rural and urban) could get access to online content at a low price. Companies like SMSGyan have tried innovating by coming up with a SMS search engine platform as well. They have even provided a service where metro train passengers in Delhi can know the train fare and route. Already 1.58 Million tablets have been bought in the country, and the presence of a huge mobile subscriber base means that Walt Disney has chosen the right market.

The deal will be fruitful for Walt Disney as India is a fast growing market in terms of social gaming, and as far as Mr. Vishal Gondal is concerned – he’s got the moolah he deserved.
